On the cover: Veteran of underground publishing
Hannu Paloviita, 48, sold Like Publishing to Otava, one of the major publishing houses, in early November. The deal puts an end to a period of eighteen years during which work has played a major role in Paloviita’s life. Like started as a hobby for students and film buffs, but has grown into a medium-size publishing house known for its anarchistic publishing list. During the process Paloviita, one of the founders of Like, has worked up to a hundred hours a week. Work has overshadowed everything else, including family life.
Stick them together
A current megatrend in technological development is convergence. It means that previously separate devices converge into one. A good example is the camera phone. A big technological change will occur when the Internet, telephone, television and radio converge into one piece of technology. What does this mean for ordinary people? Most consequences are good: people can move more freely and they have more choice. But on the other hand, some people may become digitally displaced, as they cannot or will not use the new technology.
Ad parodies
The Don’t Buy Anything day will be celebrated this Friday. A competition has been organised for young people to make ad parodies, the best of which will be a part of the event. More than twenty people or groups took part in the competition, submitting 32 pieces of work. There are ads for example for “Surrealcosmetics” and “Sola Lola” that people in Africa are supposed to drink - even if pure water is getting rare. Check out www.luontoliitto.fi/vastamainos/
